Underwood Stakes Day 2011 – Group One Preview

August 4th, 2011

Underwood Stakes Day 2011 is an important event as the feature meeting at Caulfield Racecourse on Saturday September 17 kicks off the Group 1 racing action in Melbourne for the Spring Racing Carnival.

Headlining a bumper nine-race programme is the opening elite level race of the carnival, the $350,000 Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m).

Other feature horse racing events for Luxbet punters to enjoy on Underwood Stakes Day include the:

– $125,000 Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m): offers a ballot exemption for the 2011 Caulfield Cup

– $125,000 Group 3 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m): lead-up race to the 2011 Thousand Guineas

– $125,000 Group 3 How Now Stakes (1200m)

The 2011 Underwood Stakes is a weight-for-age middle-distance staying feature that always attracts a field of the season’s best gallopers.

Used as a preparatory run for horses heading towards the spring’s top showdowns including the richest weight-for-age race on the calendar, the 2011 Cox Plate, the Underwood Stakes provides an excellent guide for Luxbet customers wanting to get in on the generous futures spring horse racing odds.

Last year’s Underwood Stakes winner was the great So You Think, the then Bart Cummings-trained champion coming off a win in the Memsie Stakes.

While already having won the 2009 Cox Plate, after their success in the Underwood So You Think went on to win the Group 1 Yalumba Stakes (2000m), the 2010 Cox Plate for a second successive year and the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day before finishing third behind Americain and Maluckyday in the 150th Melbourne Cup.

Looking at the horses that finish high up the 2011 Underwood Stakes results is a good way to get an idea of who will win this year’s $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 22.

Horses vying for the Underwood Stakes title may come via a number of earlier spring races including the $200,000 Group 2 Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 27, as So You Think did last year, and the $400,000 Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 3.

Underwood Stakes Day nominations close on September 12, before final fields of acceptances for all the races on the programme including the 2011 Underwood Stakes field are released on September 14 and published right here.

Horses already confirmed as likely Underwood Stakes contenders this year include Stradbroke Handicap winner Sincero and Graeme Rogerson’s Queensland Oaks winner Scarlett Lady.

Kiwi sensation Scarlett Lady will be out to emulate the feats of the mighty New Zealand mare Ethereal (2001) in winning the Caulfield Cup – Melbourne Cup double on the back of a Doomben Roses – Queensland Oaks winning double, and is highly fancied in the odds at Luxbet to do so.

“She’ll be competitive in anything she runs in this campaign,” Rogerson said of Scarlett Lady.

“She certainly is a pretty good filly and she looks good.

“She has put on some weight since the Oaks in Brisbane and after the Challenge Stakes (in New Zealand) she’ll go to Australia and run in the Underwood stakes and then the Turnbull before the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.”
