Confirming the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) as the likely target for the rising eight-year-old during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer David Hayes has revealed Jet Away is likely to appear in the featured Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield Racecourse on September 20th.
Appearing for just three starts over the 2013 spring, Jet Away ran on from the rear of the field to finish seventh in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) first-up on October 5th before securing undoubtedly his best result since arriving in Australia when fourth in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 19th.
Missing the 2014 Sydney Autumn Carnival after injuring a tendon when sixth in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on November 2nd, Hayes said he is pleased with the form shown by the Cape Cross entire since returning to work and is confident he will match it with the best at the highest level of Australian racing this time in.
“The Cox Plate looks ideal for him because the pace will be on and he showed me in the Turnbull (Stakes) that he was right up to the class, he should’ve nearly beaten Happy Trails that day,” Hayes told Racing Victoria.
“It just depends on how he races.
“The way he was racing last spring, I think he’d be a very good horse for either.
“I’m really happy with him and you wouldn’t know that he’s had a tendon injury.”
Claiming a total of eight race wins and five minor places from just 21 competitive starts to date, Jet Away was a notable performer under the guidance of leading British trainer Sir Henry Cecil prior to transferring to the care of Hayes at the conclusion of 2012.
Strolling home to win the Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo in his first Australian appearance, the stallion out of Kalima repeated the dose in the Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) prior to returning for his most recent preparation through the 2013 spring.
