Yet to confirm a specific path for the talented import in the lead-up to the 2014 Melbourne Cup (3200m), trainer Mike Moroney has revealed he may enter Voleuse De Coeurs in the featured Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield in September 20th first-up.
Beginning his racing career under the guidance of leading Irish trainer Dermot Weld before transferring to the care of Moroney in the lead-up to the 2013 Melbourne Cup, Voleuse De Coeurs has not been seen at the races since failing to fire and twelfth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 19th.
Initially outlining this weekend’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington as an ideal lead-off, Moroney said the Underwood Stakes on the Caulfield course will arguably pose a better option for the Teofilo mare this time in.
“The Makybe over a mile could be pretty tough on her first-up because she really hasn’t got any form until she gets over further,” Moroney told AAP.
“We’re starting to think that maybe the race at Caulfield might be the better starting point, and that will give me the chance to get a bit more work into her also.
“I’ll discuss it with the owners and throw the pros and cons around of kicking her off at a more suitable distance.”
Securing an impressive total of total of five wins and five minor places from just 17 competitive starts to date, Voleuse De Coeurs stamped her claims as one to watch from her very first racing prep; securing form around some of the world’s leading sprinters, middle distance runners and stayers.
Without doubt hitting peak condition over the 2013 racing calendar, the mare out of Vadorga finished second in the Summer Twilight Nights Race (2514m) first-up before breaking through for an impressive victory in the Listed Vintage Crop Stakes (2816m) on May 19th.
Unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight and third in the Group 3 Curragh Cup (2816m) on June 30th, Voleuse De Coeurs continued to impress when second in the Group 3 Irish St Leger Trial Stakes (2816m) before securing a maiden victory at the highest level of racing in the Group 1 Irish St Leger (2816m) in her final appearance for Weld.
