A standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, trainer Darren Weir has revealed the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield on September 20th may figure as the next target for classy grey Puissance De Lune following this weekend’s Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington.
Unlucky to not take his place in the 2013 Melbourne Cup after injuring a tendon during the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in late October, Puissance De Lune has returned to racing in slick form this season; running on for sixth in the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up before placing an impressive third in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) on August 30th.
A leading chance for success in this weekend’s Makybe Diva Stakes; an event for which he placed second in 2013, Weir said he has been thrilled with the way Puissance De Lune has progressed since the Memsie Stakes, and said he will have no issue in backing-up the six-year-old for the Underwood Stakes should his form deem it a viable option.
“He seems to be good, he’s come on a little bit again,” Weir told Racing Victoria.
“I’m really trying not to look too far ahead of Saturday to be honest.
“If he pulled up well you might back him up a week later in the Underwood or you could wait and go to the Turnbull three weeks later.”
Beginning his career abroad in France before transferring to the care of Weir at the conclusion of 2011, Puissance De Lune gained early favouritism for the 2013 Melbourne Cup off the back of an impressive preparation which included a win in the PB Lawrence Stakes and second in both the Makybe Diva Stakes and Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) most notably.
