A talented field of just ten runners have been confirmed to line up for this weekend’s featured Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield Racecourse, highlighted by several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing.
Early favourite to win the 2014 Melbourne Cup off the back of an impressive autumn preparation, trainer Gai Waterhouse has confirmed The Offer in the final field for the 2014 Underwood Stakes.
Securing an impressive record of six wins and five minor places from just 18 competitive starts so far, The Offer began his racing career under the guidance of leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien before transferring to the care of Waterhouse at the conclusion of 2012.
Returning to racing in slick form this year, the Montjeu gelding finished sixth in a minor over 1400m first-up and overcame poor position to finish third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) on March 15th before claiming three exceptional black type victories back-to-back, capped by the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on April 19th.
Performing well when fifth in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) first-up on September 6th, The Offer has been confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Tommy Berry but will have to overcome the slightly wide barrier 8.
One of the Southern Hemisphere’s highest performing horses through 2014 so-far, trainer Roger James has confirmed talented kiwi raider Silent Achiever for the 2014 Underwood Stakes.
Securing an impressive total of ten wins and five minor places from her 27 competitive starts to date, Silent Achiever returned to racing with a comfortable win in a minor over 1500m before claiming three sensational Group 1 victories back-to-back; taking out all of the New Zealand Stakes (2000m), Ranvet Stakes (2000m) and The BMW (2400m) before placing fourth in the featured Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships.
Running on for fourth in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 30th, James is confident the step-up in distance and general racing conditions of the Underwood Stakes will play directly into the strengths of the O’reilly mare this weekend.
A standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Paul Beshara has confirmed Happy Trails in the final field for the 2014 Underwood Stakes.
Running on for fifth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) first-up before placing seventh in the Memsie three weeks later, the Good Journey gelding finished fourth in the 2013 edition of the Underwood Stakes before winning the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) and finishing a close second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).
Having followed a strikingly similar form line over his first two starts this time in, Beshara is confident jockey Michael Rodd will get the best from Happy Trails this weekend, particularly from barrier 6.
An impressive first-up winner before fading for sixth in the Dato’ last time out, trainer Peter Morgan has been thrilled with the form and work produced by Star Rolling over the last week and is confident of a maiden Group 1 victory in the 2014 Underwood Stakes.
Unlucky to be balloted out of several of his key targets through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Star Rolling returned to racing in good form this year; finishing second in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) on February 8th and third in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) most notably over four starts.
Charging home to win the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up this time in, Star Rolling is offered a great chance of breaking his Group 1 drought in the Underwood Stakes from the ideal barrier 4.
