A talented field of just ten runners have been confirmed for this weekend’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield Racecourse, offering punters exceptional value from a betting point of view and several opportunities to place a winning wager.
Having returned to the track in career-best form this year, classy Kiwi raider Silent Achiever has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite for success in Underwood Stakes betting markets, currently available at $3.20 odds ahead of Foreteller ($4.80), Stipulate and The Offer; currently sharing the third line of betting at $6 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Will Silent Achiever secure an incredible fifth Group 1 victory in the 2014 Underwood Stakes, or will one of her talented rivals find the line in the clear?
Happy Trails ($13)
A standout performer over the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Happy Trails is yet to finish in contention in either of his race starts since returning this time in, but without doubt offers punters the best value for money in Underwood Stakes betting markets at current $13 odds. Running on for fifth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) at the beginning of his impressive 2013 campaign, the Good Journey gelding was unlucky to be blocked for a run and seventh in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes (1200m), but quickly regathered for fourth in the Underwood Stakes before breaking through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m); returning to the paddock after finishing a close second in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m). Secured two strikingly similar results in his first two starts this time to those of 2013, Happy Trails is a great chance of success from barrier 6 and is more than worth consideration for a bet this weekend.
Star Rolling ($7)
Securing a commendable total of five wins and two minor places from just 13 competitive starts to date, Star Rolling will leave from the ideal barrier 4 in the 2014 Underwood Stakes and is more than worth consideration for a bet with jockey Stephen Baster confirmed to retain the ride. Finishing second in the Group 3 Carlyon Cup (1600m) and third in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) most notably over four starts through autumn, the Casino Prince gelding charged home to win the Group 2 P.B. Lawrence Stakes (1400m) first-up, but faded to finishing sixth in the Group 2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) last time out. Currently available at odds of $7 for success or $2.30 to run a place, punters may find value as adding Star Rolling as a selection in an Underwood Stakes quinella or trifecta bet.
The Offer ($6)
Early favourite for the 2014 Melbourne Cup following an impressive autumn preparation, trainer Gai Waterhouse has been thrilled with the returning form of classy import The Offer and is expecting a polished performance in the 2014 Underwood Stakes. Beginning his racing tenure under leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien before transferring to the care of Waterhouse as the conclusion of 2012, the Montjeu gelding finishing third in the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) in just his second competitive start before claiming three exceptional black type victories back-to-back; taking out each of the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m), Group 2 Chairman’s Handicap (2600m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) most notably this year. Having run on for fifth in the Dato’ first-up, The Offer appears to be peaking in form leading into the Underwood Stakes and is more than worth consideration for a bet.
